Yesterday we opened up the 2014-2015 season out in Shelbyville with a tri-meet with Shelbyville and Mattoon. In our first dual we lost to a very strong lineup from Mattoon, but were able to rally and beat Shelbyville. Congratulations are in order for all who participated, but especially Cam McMullen, Eivory Shellman, Drevion Gordon, Michael Roby, Dontace Roberson and Lavell Flemming. We were also fortunate enough to have a number of our JV wrestlers get in exhibition matches alongside our varsity.

With wrestling season close upon us, the coaching staff would like to remind all wrestlers to get their paperwork turned in to their respective Athletic Directors as soon as possible. The first day of tryouts will be Monday, December 1st. Franklin and Jefferson wrestlers should talk to their Athletic Directors about which bus to take after school to bring them over to Edison. All wrestlers should bring gym shorts, a t-shirt and wrestling shoes to practice in every day. Wrestling shoes will need to be bought by the wrestler. Wrestlers may tryout without shoes, but will need to have them by the second week of practice. We look forward to seeing you all there.

We have been out of action for a while due to some meet cancellations, but we were back in action at our Regional Tournament held in Mattoon this past Saturday. It was an excellent day for wrestling and we had some outstanding performances. First I want to congratulate the following wrestlers. Even though they did not qualify for Sectionals this past weekend, I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication this year and helping our team turn in one of our most successful years ever. Wrestling is one of the hardest sports you can compete in. It not only takes physical tools to get the job done, but it also takes extreme mental toughness to not only be successful but to even make it through a grueling wrestling season. Congrats to the following wrestlers:
Dylan McBride
Stanley Sotomayor
Rio Beals
Zach Carr
Braedon Clopton
Jalynn Evans
Jeremiah Risinger
Ian Davis
Jacob Hampton
Sam Sargeant
Isaiah Unander
Julien Turner
At our regional competition we turned in some outstanding individual performances but there are two in particular that I want to highlight. First is Deshawn Sturkey. At the beginning of the year Deshawn took his lumps and was having trouble wrestling up to the level he wanted to be at. In the last half of the season he really turned it up a notch improving drastically since day one. It paid off big results as he turned in a 4th place finish Saturday which was enough for him to advance to Sectionals this weekend. I also want to recognize Darnell Flemings match against Colton Birch of Mt. Zion. Darnell lost a tough match to Birch earlier in the season by a score of 1-0. The second time around it was Darnell who pulled out the 3-1 victory. It was a barn burner of a match with a lot of back and forth action but Darnell believed in himself and pulled out the big win. I wish I could call it a major upset but the whole coaching staff knew that if Darnell wrestled up to his ability he would pull out the W. Great job! I also want to congratulate the following wrestlers for advancing to Sectionals this weekend.
Andre Gordon - 3rd Place
John Miller - 4th Place
Deshawn Sturkey - 4th Place
Trystyn Schoonover - 1st Place
Darnell Fleming - 2nd Place
Anthony Davis - 1st Place
Drake Mingo - 1st Place
Sectionals will be held this weekend at Mackinaw High School in Mackinaw, IL. Wrestling will start at 9am. The top 3 placers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament the following weekend in Dekalb, IL. Good luck to all who will be wrestling this weekend.

Last weekend our team competed at the Mahomet Invitational Tournament. It was an extremely tough tournament with many wrestlers in each weight class ranked in state. We had several wrestlers who were a match away from placing. Rio Beals, Jeremiah Risinger, Julien Turner, and Isiah Unander were all a match away from placing in the tournament. Congrats to Anthony and Trystyn for taking 2nd place and 1st place respectively. Anthony dropped a tough match in the finals 4-0 while Trystyn took a decisive 2-0 victory to capture the title. As a team we finished 15th out of 19 teams. Despite the low finish I feel it was a succesful day and we wrestled extremely hard. Congrats to everyone who competed!
Last night we wrestled two very tough teams in Monticello and Mt. Zion. We lost to Monticello by a score of 21-60 and dropped a close match to Mt. Zion by a score of 37-48.
As we close in on Regionals I wanted to highlight the records of some of our top performers this year:
Braedon Clopton 13-5
Jeremiah Risinger 8-8
Isiah Unander 9-6
Julien Turner 9-7
Trystyn Schoonover 14-1
Darnell Flemming 5-2
Anthony Davis 13-2
Drake Mingo 10-1

Yesterday we traveled to compete against Rochester in a dual meet. We started out the meet with a win at 275 and cruised from their on our way to a 54-27 win. Congratulations to everyone who travelled. We wrestled tough and you can really see our improvement.
Just a reminder that we have a very long tournament in Mahomet this weekend. We will be collecting $5 from each wrestler to purchase food and snacks for the entire team. I will announce who is going to the meet Tuesday night and the money will be due on Thursday. Thank you for your help and a big thank you to Tracy Cook (Trystynn Schoonover's mom) for helping to organize this.

We had a fantastic day at the Bloomington tournament taking 3rd out of 16 teams and bringing home some hardware! Heading into the final round of the tournament we were in 4th place behind host team Bloomington Junior High. In the final round of matches we kicked it into high gear and had some outstanding performances. Here are the individual results from the day.
Darnell Flemming - 1st Place
Andre Gordon - 1st Place
Dazhon Moore - 2nd Place
Zach Carr - 2nd Place
Deshawn Sturkey - 5th Place
Rio Beals - 5th Place
We had several other wrestlers who were also a match away from getting a medal. Overall it was an outstanding day and we are improving greatly. I want to give a shout out to Deshawn Sturkey for having an exceptional day. He went 5-0 on the day. Due to an error in the bracketing, he was not allowed his chance to go for first place. When he found out about this he shrugged it off and went to work. Great job Deshawn and a great job to everyone on the team!

Last night we wrestled the Argenta Bombers and claimed a decisive victory of 83-24! Argenta only won one varsity match the whole night outside of the forfeits they received. A couple of parents and wrestlers have asked me about winter break practices. I will be sending a handout home today with each wrestler with the winter break schedule in addition to posting it here.

On Saturday we traveled to Mattoon to take on the Wildcats. We had a very successful day and Coach Archey and I are very pleased with the outcome. Almost everybody on the team won at least 1 match. Tyrstynn Schoonover, Drake Mingo, Isaiah Unander, Stanley Sotomayor and Braedon Clopton all went 2-0 on the day. What stood out the most to the coaching staff weren’t all the wins we got but the positive energy and improvement we saw. Everybody was standing up cheering for their teammates and you could feel the excitement. We also saw tons of improvement. For many of our wrestlers, they barely have a week of practices under their belt. Everybody has improved by leaps and bounds from where they started the first day and this has us very excited for the rest of the season. Tonight we will take on Argenta and I look forward to continued improvement and another exciting match.

Wrestling season is just around the corner. Last year we had a very successful season and I am looking forward to another great year. The parents and wrestlers informational meeting will take place on November 30th at 5:30pm at Edison Middle School in the cafeteria. This is a mandatory meeting for all wrestlers and parents for anyone interested in trying out for the team. We will cover the rules and expectations for the upcoming season as well as answer any questions you might have. In order to participate for the first day of practice, you must have a current physical and a copy of your insurance card on file. Please have this turned in by November 23rd to your respective Athletic Director. If you do not have this you cannot attend practice. Please see your schools athletic director if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you all on the 30th.

Today was a great day. We took 5th place as a team and had a ton of individual performances.
Wyatt Sommer 2nd place - Wyatt wrestled a great tournament and made it to the finals. He wrestled his opponent tough but came up just short of taking the title. Look for him to do big things next week at sectionals!
Braedon Clopton 3rd place - Braedon had the best match of the day if not the year! Braedon was wrestling in the match that decided if he went to sectionals. If he lost his season was over but if he won he got to go on to sectionals. After two periods, Braedon was down 1-0 and choose neutral for the 3rd period. Braedon kept after his opponent and got the ref to call his opponent for stalling. After almost taking his opponent down two times, with 15 seconds remaining things looked pretty grim for Braedon. Braedon continued to attack his opponent and he tied the score up because his opponent was called for stalling again. Braedon didn't even realize that the score was now tied and he was headed into overtime! After the first sudden death overtime period ended scoreless, Braedon and his opponent were headed into the final overtime and since his opponent scored first he got the choice and selected down. About 12 seconds into the period Braedon turned his opponent to score back points and win the match. Braedon showed that if you don't get down on yourself and keep after your opponent good things will happen.
Isaiah Unander 3rd place - Isaiah had a big day despite thinking he didn't have a shot at regionals. He came out and wrestled tough and now hes through to sectionals.
Dillon Miller 4th place – When Dillon needed to the most today he turned up the intesity and won his match that guaranteed that he was a sectional qualifier. Congrats to Dillon!
Trystyn Schoonover 3rd place - Trystyn won a big match today by beating a man-child from Mattoon for 3rd place. Trystyn wrestled the way he's capable and made some in match adjustments and was victorious.
Anthony Davis 2nd place - The big man wrestled tough today but just missed taking home the title. Even though Anthony only weighs 180lbs, he is wrestling up a weight class at 215 he is still one of the toughest kids at that weight class.
To those who did not qualify and everyone else on the team. Congrats on a great season. I have enjoyed working with all of you and I look forward to you coming back next year!

This past weekend was probably our best weekend yet. We wrestled great as a team and as individuals. We had several place winners and several others that were just one win away from placing. I can't describe how happy and proud I was to see the way we wrestled. It was like night and day from the previous weekend. Here are the following place winners:
Trystyn Schoonover - 1st Place!!!
Braedon Clopton - 4th Place
Dillon Miller - 4th Place
Anthony Davis - 5th Place
Congrats to those place winners and everyone else who went and wrestled. We have one last tournament tomorrow night in Mahomet before regionals next weekend. I hope to see everyone at Mahomet!
I posted a new youtube link on the links page. It is the last link listed. Please click on it and it will bring you to a youtube video of a Champaign wrestler wrestling. From their you can click on my username just above the video on the left side and see all the videos I have uploaded to youtube. It is against district policy to identify the student-athletes who is wrestling so you will just have to look through them to see who is who. Enjoy!
Be sure to check out the new Wrestler of the Week!

Not a very good weekend for Champaign. We struggled as a team and took a couple step backs. I am not worried because I know we will have a good week of practice and respond at our next meet on Tuesday. Congrats to Trystynn Schoonover for taking 6th place.
If you can, check out the following link. This is a video of Austin Gomez wrestling. Austin is the younger brother of one of my former teamates and friends at U of I. He is one of the best wrestlers in the country for his age and weight.

Sunday Jan. 30th
This week was filled with ups and downs. We suffered some tough losses but we also had some great successes. We wrestled tough against Bloomington and Chiddix on Tuesday. Bloomington is a perennial powerhouse and won the state title last year. We should be proud of how tough we wrestled. We won some against them and we were also right their in a lot of matches. On Saturday we wrestled Rochester extremely tough and I want to give a shout out to two individuals. Chris Le lost two close matches but after much hard work this season, he is starting to come around and has showed tremendous improvement from when he started the season. The other shout out goes out to Anthony Davis. Anthony wrestled a man child on Saturday but didn't let that intimidate him! He walked right out their wrestled his match and got the pin! Great job big guy! We will be back in action on Saturday February 5th at the Mahomet Tournament. Should be a great day and I hope to see you all there!
Sunday Jan. 23rd
Yesterday the team traveled to Bloomington, IL for a day filled with wrestling. We had some great individual performances that led to a 7th place finish out of 16 as a team.

Geno Moore-Williams and Chris Reynolds - 3rd Place
Anthony Davis and Drake Mingo - 4th Place
Chris Le - 5th Place
Stanley Sotomayor and Braedon Clopton - 6th Place
Congrats to those individuals and everyone else who traveled. We wrestled tough and improved from the week before and that's what we really love to see! Tuesday we have our second home meet of the year as we host Chiddix and Bloomington. It's going to be a tough match and I look forward to seeing you all their.
